WhatsApp on Apple Watch Now Lets You Use Any Emoji for Reactions

WhatsApp on Apple Watch showing the expanded emoji reaction picker

Reacting to WhatsApp messages from an Apple Watch is becoming much more flexible. WhatsApp is expanding emoji reactions on the smartwatch, allowing users to go beyond the six emojis that were previously available.

With the latest update, Apple Watch users can open a much larger emoji collection, browse different categories, or quickly pick from recently used emojis. The change makes reacting from the wrist feel much closer to the experience already available on iPhone.

No More Six-Emoji Limitation

Previously, WhatsApp users could only choose from six emojis when reacting to a message on Apple Watch.

That selection was enough for simple reactions such as liking a message, laughing at something, or showing surprise.

However, some conversations naturally call for a more specific emoji.

If the right emoji was not included in the six available options, users had to switch to their iPhone to find another one. That added an unnecessary step for a device designed to handle quick interactions without reaching for the phone.

WhatsApp is now addressing that limitation.

Apple Watch Gets Access to the Full Emoji Selection

According to WABetaInfo, WhatsApp is expanding emoji reactions on Apple Watch with access to a much larger emoji collection.

When users press and hold a message, the familiar reaction tray still shows six emojis. However, a new option lets users open the expanded emoji picker.

From there, they can browse recently used emojis or explore different emoji categories.

This means users can choose a more specific reaction without having to pick up their iPhone.

Eight Emoji Categories Are Available

WhatsApp organizes the expanded emoji selection into several categories to make browsing easier on the Apple Watch's smaller display.

  • Smileys
  • Nature
  • Food
  • Activity
  • Travel
  • Objects
  • Symbols
  • Flags

Users can scroll through the list and open the category they need. Recently used emojis are also displayed near the top, making frequently used reactions easier to access.

This approach makes sense for a smartwatch. Apple Watch has a much smaller screen than an iPhone, so categories and a scrollable interface provide a practical way to browse a large emoji collection.

The Reaction Experience Is Now Closer to iPhone

On iPhone, WhatsApp already allows users to open additional emoji options when reacting to messages.

The latest Apple Watch update brings a similar concept to the wearable. The main difference is how WhatsApp adapts the interface for the smaller display.

Functionally, a reaction sent from Apple Watch works the same way as one sent from an iPhone. The main change is the way users select their emoji.

This also fits with WhatsApp's recent focus on refining its iPhone interface. The company has been gradually updating different parts of the app, including the message menu with Apple's Liquid Glass-inspired design.

Why This Small Change Actually Matters

At first glance, adding more emoji options may not seem like a major update.

But on Apple Watch, it can make a noticeable difference because one of the main benefits of a smartwatch is being able to handle quick interactions without opening your iPhone.

When someone sends a message that does not require a full reply, a reaction can be enough.

Having access to more emojis makes those quick responses more expressive and less restrictive.

A particular message may call for an emoji that is not part of the default six. Now users have more freedom to choose a reaction that actually fits the conversation.

The Feature Is Still Rolling Out

There is one important detail: the expanded emoji reaction picker is being rolled out gradually.

That means installing the latest WhatsApp version does not necessarily guarantee that the feature will immediately appear on your Apple Watch. WABetaInfo reports that availability is being expanded gradually.

WhatsApp has also not officially listed the feature in its changelog yet.

So if your Apple Watch still shows only the original six reaction emojis, there is no need to assume something is wrong with the app. Your account may simply not have received the rollout yet.

WhatsApp Keeps Expanding Its Apple Watch Experience

The interesting part is that WhatsApp appears to be continuing to build on its Apple Watch experience rather than stopping at basic messaging.

The official Apple Watch app already supports reading messages, replying to chats, sending voice messages, viewing media, and reacting to messages.

More flexible emoji reactions make the wearable experience even more useful for short communication.

Instead of constantly reaching for the iPhone, users can handle more small interactions directly from their wrist.

Final Thoughts

WhatsApp is expanding emoji reactions on Apple Watch by giving users access to a much larger emoji selection. Instead of being limited to six options, users can browse eight categories and quickly access recently used emojis.

It may look like a small change, but it makes sense for a smartwatch where quick, simple interactions are especially important.

The feature is currently rolling out gradually, so not every Apple Watch user will see the expanded emoji picker immediately.

If it has not appeared on your device yet, you may simply need to wait for WhatsApp to expand the rollout to your account.
