Gemini on Mac Is Getting Apple Messages Integration, Bringing AI Closer to macOS

Google appears to be pushing Gemini deeper into everyday desktop workflows. The latest development could be particularly interesting for Mac users: Gemini for macOS is preparing an integration with Apple Messages.

Once fully enabled, the integration could allow users to ask Gemini to read conversations, search message history, and send text messages without manually navigating through the Messages app.

It is another sign that Google wants Gemini to become more than a standalone chatbot. The company is increasingly positioning its AI assistant as a layer that can understand context and interact with the applications people already use.

Gemini Is Preparing to Connect With Apple Messages

According to a report from 9to5Google, the Gemini macOS app has gained a new Connected App called @messages.

The integration is designed around three main capabilities: reading messages, searching message history, and sending messages.

That could make simple tasks much more conversational.

For example, users could ask Gemini to:

• “Search Messages for our dinner reservation.”
• “Send John a message saying I’ll be five minutes late.”

There Are Still Some Important Limitations

This does not mean Gemini can completely control Apple Messages.

The initial integration comes with several restrictions.

According to 9to5Google, Gemini cannot manage group-chat participants, change group-chat photos, schedule messages for later delivery, or edit messages that have already been sent.

It also cannot send file, photo, or media attachments through the integration.

Tapback reactions are not supported either, meaning actions such as Love, Like, Dislike, Laugh, Emphasize, and Question remain outside the initial feature set.

For now, the focus is clearly on plain text messaging.

The Feature Is Showing Up, but It May Not Work Yet

There is another important detail for Mac users.

9to5Google reports that the @messages integration appears under Settings > Connected Apps after updating Gemini for macOS to version 1.116.5.889.

However, when the report was published, a server-side component appeared to be missing. As a result, @messages was not yet recognized inside the Gemini prompt box.

So if a Mac user sees the setting but cannot actually use the integration, the problem may not be with the installation.

The functionality appears to be rolling out in stages.

Why This Is Bigger Than Just Sending a Text

The interesting part of this update is not simply that Gemini may be able to send a message.

The bigger story is how AI assistants are changing the way we interact with desktop software.

Traditionally, users opened an application first and then performed a task inside that application.

AI is gradually reversing that workflow.

Instead of thinking about which application needs to be opened, users can describe the task and let the assistant work with the relevant application.
